Towardssustainableand autonomousluteinproduction – a heterotrophicmicroalgaeroute
The presentation will cover part of theresearch activities carried out at the Chair of Biotechnology of CentraleSupélec aimed at developing a biotechnologicalprocess for lutein production.
Lutein is a yellow carotenoid known for its beneficial effects on human health,particularly brain health. Historically supplied through green vegetables inthe diet, its intake has progressively decreased in modern eating habits(approximately 1.7 mg/day compared with the recommended 6-14 mg/day).
As a result, supplementation may become necessary. Current production processesare neither sustainable nor domestic. Our group is therefore developing of abiotechnology-based production route using microalgae, which can contain up to1000 times more lutein per serving than green vegetables.
After introducing this context, the presentation will be organized into threeparts. First, it will address an alternative to the conventional photosynthetesis: heterotrophic cultivation (bioprocessperspective). Second, it will explore (modestly) the physiological differencesbetween photoautotrophic and heterotrophic cells, including variations inlutein content. Finally, in a broader perspective, the numerical andcomputational tools supporting these investigations will be highlighted.

Sustainability challenges of the bioeconomy
The use of bioresources is not, in itself, a guarantee of sustainability. The aim of this presentation is to outline the major sustainability issues specific to the bioeconomy, as well as the specific contributions of the bioeconomy and circular bioeconomy to the sustainability of our societies. It reviews the different visions of the role of the bioeconomy in making societies more sustainable, ranging from deep systemic transformation to simple “green” substitution; the trade-offs involved in allocating bioresource uses ; and several specific issues: are biofuels automatically more sustainable than fossil fuels? Are bioresources commodities like any other?

Repas du laboratoire – Auberge espagnole & Jeux d’extérieurs
Evénement de type “auberge espagnole”: chacun amenant de quoi se restaurer et le laboratoire fournira les boissons (softs et bières). Pour des raisons d’allergies alimentaire etc., ce que vous amènerez ne devra pas être partagé avec vos collègues (ou alors vous le faites en conscience et confiance!). Nous prolongerons cette auberge espagnole par un après-midi festif et vous demandons donc d’amener des jeux d’extérieurs en espérant que la météo permettra de profiter à fond de cette demi-journée conviviale!
